The students from the upper grades of the high schools in Altensteig, Dornstetten, Horb and Nagold had actually prepared for a presentation to around 200 guests at the headquarters of the fischer group of companies in Tumlingen. But the consequences of the Corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works of all those involved. Instead of canceling the competition, schools, jury and fischer decided to hold a digital event in the form of a video conference – in line with the motto “Zukunft Schule Digital”. Among others, our futurologist Christopher Peterka sat on the jury. The jury was particularly impressed by the presentation of the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium from Nagold. The students were rewarded with first place and secured prize money of 10,000 euros for their high school. The gannaca team led by Christopher Peterka and Carlotta Simonis was already able to form a first impression in February 2020 at a joint workshop – assuming that they would see each other again in May for the grand final day and the award ceremony. All the more impressive that the online final day was nevertheless a 100% success and that the students, despite the circumstances, went to the start with all motivation and enthusiasm for the announced topics “Digitality & Education” and “Algorithmic Public Sphere”.
We are eagerly awaiting the finale this year. While we still assumed last early summer that this year’s Digitization Award could be held live, it was clear by fall at the latest that preparations for the 2021 Digitization Award would be carried out online throughout. In the course of this, we notice with great pleasure with every further, virtual meeting how practiced the schools are in the meantime in dealing with digital media. We are certain that the commitment of the fischer group in the form of the development of this format will drive this positive development even further. A nice – albeit small – consolation on the long road back to the usual school routine. We are already looking forward to the next meeting and are glad to be part of this project with gannaca.
